Riverside Shakespeare Festival

Dear Riverside Community,

Riverside Shakespeare Festival is Riverside’s premiere event. It brings together celebrated artists from the Corridor along with professionals from across the country. It provides Shakespeare’s plays at no charge for all who wish to see them. Last year, local families and first-time theatregoers joined longtime Riverdogs and visitors from all over the state for summer evenings full of great language and memorable theatre.

Shakespeare belongs to us all.

But with COVID-19 cases again rising in Johnson County and in many areas over the last two weeks, it has become clear that Riverside cannot guarantee the kind of safe environment required this summer for our artists and audiences. Not yet anyway. When that time comes, Riverside will join other cultural partners to help lead the way out of this crisis.

We remain committed to “The Winter’s Tale”. It is a tale of rebirth, of forgiveness, of the type of healing that comes with time. And so we are proud to announce that “The Winter’s Tale” will be presented next summer alongside another Shakespeare classic. This return to TWO full productions on our outdoor stage will revive Riverside’s tradition of providing a full summer of quality theatre to thousands of patrons in Lower City Park — all free of charge. We can think of no better capstone to our 40th Anniversary Season.

For those who can’t wait, there will be a Free Zoom Reading of “The Winter’s Tale” on Sunday, August 9th at 7:30pm. Details to be shared soon!

We are incredibly grateful for our 2020 Riverside Shakespeare Festival sponsors: Community Foundation of Johnson Country and 5224GOOD, University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Kum & Go, Delta Dental, Bazooka Farmstar, Miriam Gilbert, Carolyn Russell Wallace & Dan Wallace, and Trudy & Stephen Russell. They, along with our many donors and patrons, keep professional theatre part of the fabric of our great community.

Wishing you all a safe summer. We’ll see you soon with “The Winter’s Tale” reading and more virtual offerings in the months ahead!

Sincerely,

The Riverside Family
